Truman College
Box Lunch

Academic enrichment, remedial activities, and ESL tutoring for students age 6-16 are offered Monday through Thursday from 9:00-12:00. A free box lunch is provided at noon. School runs from late June through mid-August at Truman College, 1145 W. Wilson. Enrollment starts in May at South-East Asia Center.

SEAC'S curriculum stresses communication skills, higher order thinking skills and interpersonal skills and understanding -- prerequisites to success in school or life in America. As immigrant children naturally have greater difficulty mastering the English language and difficulty entering a college of their choice with lower college-entrance-test scores in reading, writing and comprehension -- reading and writing in English are given special attention. Because social scientific thinking is so much more important in a complex urban society than it was in the Old World societies of so many immigrants, Summer School places special emphasis on the social sciences as well. Relatedly, children participate in cross cultural bridge building and cooperative activities. They learn to solve problems and resolve conflicts peacefully, build self-esteem, increase interest in learning, and develop social and life skills.

Since most immigrants are ahead of American students in mathematics, and since parents can usually help their children in these subjects, students are challenged to do higher level and applied mathematics such as geometry and statistics -- subjects with great practical value in the technological world in which we live.

Although many immigrant students need little incentive to develop keen computer skills, beginning in 2001 SEAC Summer School will provide an introduction to computers for all computer neophytes, as well as advanced classes for other students.
