SEAC's after school Homework Help Program
helps students age 6-16 in six northeast Chicago public libraries.
There is no charge, and students simply come to the library
and ask the librarian where to find the Homework Help Program.
The only obligation is for parents to fill out a confidential
form, which are required.
The program provides a safe, wholesome,
supervised place for children to go after school. It helps
children whose parents are too busy or tired at the end of
the day to help with homework. It also helps children whose
parents are immigrants and who are not able to adequately
help children with their work.
Moreover, the program provides children
a cross culturally sensitive mentor and role model. Students
build positive, trusting relationships with an adult in a
welcoming learning environment.
Each library has one tutor and frequent
volunteers. Tutors keep parents of enrolled students informed
and contact parents at least once a semester to report on
attendance, student academic progress and behavior.
Since busy parents often have no time
to contact schools, and busy schools often do not have the
time to contact parents, the Homework Help Program takes the
time to keep parents and schools in touch with one another
-- and in concert with the after school portion of the child's
life as well.
